Aromatherapy

Aromatic oils were widely used in ancient Chinese, Egyptian, Greek, Indian and Roman civilisations for cosmetics, fumigation, embalming as well as medicines and religious rituals. Perfumes and medicines were prepared in temples and there was a Greek temple of aromatherapy. Aromatic substances were burnt to appease gods and channel divine knowledge. The Greeks ascribed divine origins to aromatic plants. Over time the knowledge and use of these essential oils spread through Greece, the Roman Empire and finally into Europe. In the Middle Ages, incense and aromas were used during rituals, as perfumes and disinfectants, especially during plagues.
Present day aromatherapy can be traced back to the beginning of 20th century. Professor R M Gattefosse first used the term aromatherapie as the title of his 1928 book. During World War II, French army surgeons used aromatic oils in wound treatment and began using them more widely with psychiatric, diabetic, tuberculosis and cancer patients. Robert Tisserand introduced aromatherapy to Britain with his legendary book The Art of Aromatherapy.

Essential oils are highly concentrated substances extracted by expression, absorption or distillation from plants and trees that contain essential vital force, life energy and universal cosmic energy. Essential oils are recommended for many conditions, ranging from asthma to cancer and tuberculosis. Therapeutic indices, apparently based on tradition and experience, list up to 200 medical conditions that may benefit from one of approximately 150 oils.

How Aromatherapy works?

During massage treatment, neuro-chemicals and balancing hormones are released, stimulating the immune system, reducing toxins or influencing psycho-neuro-immunology. Essential oils can be used to balance the energy flows of the body in a similar way to acupuncture. Each essential oil has a different stimulating effect on the brain, such as lavender, which can increase relaxation due to the effect on alpha waves in the back of the head, or jasmine which raises beta waves producing the sensation of alertness. I select the essential oils based on the condition being treated, the chemical properties of the oils in relation to the client before me, taking into account his/her physical and psychical condition.
